Neurosis is a metal band from Oakland that formed in 1985. The band went on hiatus in 2019 after the band dismissed Scott Kelly, a founding member and guitarist/vocalist, for allegations of spousal and family abuse. Kelly later confirmed those allegations were true.
Fast forward to 2026 and the end of the hiatus, with the surprise release of An Undying Love for a Burning World – their 12th studio album and first since 2016 – with a new guitarist and vocalist: Aaron Turner from the band ISIS and Sumac.
The current lineup:
- Aaron Turner: guitar/vocals
- Dave Edwardson: bass (original member)
- Jason Roeder: drums (original member)
- Steve Von Till: guitar/vocals (member since 1989)
- Noah Landis: keyboards/synths/samples/programming (member since 1995)
With the longevity and discography comes influence. Neurosis has been credited by bands like Converge, Mastodon, Machine Head, Slipknot, Yob, ISIS, Cave In, Pelican, Baroness, Pallbearer, Oathbreaker, Deafheaven, and more.
This new album is brutally heavy at times and atmospheric, almost slowcore/post-rock, at others – usually in the same song. It’s a vivid listen that takes you on a serious trip, giving it almost a soundtrack feel. There aren’t many 40 year old bands that can do this intensity (and quality) for an entire album. It’s impressive.
Favorite tracks:
- “First Red Rays” - almost a post-rock/stoner metal crossover. Think if Mogwai covered a Neurosis song.
- “Mirror Deep” - you can hear how their sound influenced Converge, Deadguy and others.
