In Rainbows

Radiohead

Why is this one of my Desert Island Discs?

Radiohead is another all-time favorite band, beginning with their debut album Pablo Honey which I bought on cassette during my senior year of high school at the Disc Jockey store in the Lockport Mall.

They are another band I relate to at different points in my life... Pablo Honey, The Bends, and OK Computer were all high school and college records – perfect for that time. Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Thief were all Seattle-era records, where I was expanding my music interest and those three fit that period of my life. In Rainbows came out right at the point our kids were born and made a big impact on me, as it was also their "name your price" record, which was groundbreaking for a band as big as Radiohead to do that...

While I have a few favorite Radiohead albums beyond this one, which made it hard to pick just one (Kid A being the main competitor for this slot in my Desert Island Discs)... I went with In Rainbows based on it hitting at a real transition point in our life and its overall impact on the music industry.

Beyond that, there's enough interesting songwriting and musicianship on this record (and maybe I'd cheat and bring Disc 2 as well) to make it a record that can sustain regular plays. 18 songs and just over an hour of playtime, if you can include the second disc... it's certainly a record that can either give you something to dissect or operate as background music to pass the time.
