Post one of your favorite country songs.

Not a huge country person, so only two songs jumped out at me.

The first is 25 Minutes to Go from At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash. It’s fast and you can hear the crowd loving it.

The other was Eastbound and Down by Jerry Reed. It’s catchy as hell will stick in your brain for days. And it was co-written by a trans woman!

Post one of your favorite musical performances from a movie.

I mean, come on. Singin’ in the Rain is one of the greatest movies ever. How can you not hear this song and smile? Gene Kelly wasn’t the best singer but you can hear the earnestness in his voice.

Post one of your favorite Broadway songs.

Maybe my favorite song in a musical besides Singin’ in the Rain. The movie version has such passion in it and the staging is incredible. I love them weaving in and out of the trees as they sing to one another.

I hadn’t heard any of Grace Jones’ music until about a month ago. That’s a shame since it’s right up my alley. In addition to being a fashion and queer icon, she can also turn out some bangers.

Nightclubbing (the album) has a weird, almost droning quality throughout and there’s something weirdly creepy about Grace Jones’s voice. But it works.

It’s a real vibes album.

3rd Bass, in addition to being one of my favorite hip-hop groups, was also one of the first I remember hearing.

I remember buying some sort of rap basics playlist from iTunes on a whim in the early 2000s. At the time, I don’t think I’d ever consciously listened to any sort of hip-hop. The first song was “Step in the Arena” by Gang Starr. Other songs I remember being on there: “Bring the Noise” by Public Enemy, “Quik is the Name” by DJ Quik, “Freaky Tales” by Too $hort, and “The Gas Face” by 3rd Bass.

I immediately loved “The Gas Face”. And I especially loved the special appearance by K.M.D.’s Zev Love X.

After buying 3rd Bass’ albums, I went looking for some of K.M.D.’s music. The first song I found was “Who Me?”. I remember getting yelled at for listening to Mr. Hood on repeat. Since then, K.M.D. has become one of my favorite artists. I think I like it even more than Zev’s later stuff as MF Doom. There’s a playfulness that’s missing from the Doom stuff. But I love the deep, weirdly warped samples from all over the place.
