#365songs (70 / 365)
I don't like this song, or Sublime in general. I remember a friend of mine in high school being shocked that I didn't like Sublime. "Even my mom likes Sublime!" he said. But I didn't like them, and I think it's because even with my questionable taste at the time, I thought their lyrics sucked.
What I remember about this song is hearing it in the car with my dad. Brad Nowell sang "I don't practice Santeria, I ain't got no crystal ball / I had a million dollars, but I —" and my dad sang the next line, "I spent it all!" with him, with the same cadence if not the same notes. I was like "what? You know this song?" and my dad was like "No, this is the first time I've ever heard it. It was just so obvious he was going to sing that." I'm certain he wasn't being sarcastic. I'm pretty sure but not 100% certain he was telling the truth. But either way, the lesson I learned was that when you're writing a lyric, it may be tempting to just do the most obvious thing. But you fucking shouldn't.
