Kind of a follow-up to yesterday's entry; I only ever got into Modest Mouse due to their sounding, at times, kind of like Pixies.

"Debaser" is a perfect song that, yes, debases the idea of a pop song. One verse repeated one and a half times, since by my reckoning the "Ah ha ha ho!"s the second time around mean it only counts half. Simple chords, simple riff, simple bassline, hot drums, absolutely legendary vocal performance. Who needs a melody when you can scream like Black Francis does here? I remember getting really into Surfer Rosa during a study abroad program in Budapest, but I don't think I got Doolittle until I got back. And at no point did I get as obsessed with anything on Surfer Rosa as I did with "Debaser." Because it's a perfect song!!!

I also karaoke-performed this song in front of a sizable crowd at a "convention" (really kind of just a big party) for Achewood fans in like, I don't know, 2013 or something. I'm no Black Francis but, what the hell. People seemed to like it. Probably because "Debaser" is a perfect freakin' song.
