#365songs (81 / 365)
Wallsocket has been a daily listen this week, and "My guy" is one of the songs on it I look forward to the most. Sure it's catchy as fuck, like all the pop songs on Wallsocket ("Cops and robbers," "Locals," "Johnny johnny johnny," "Old money bitch," etc.) but it also taps into what makes me think the album will have some staying power: each verse sung from the perspective of a different character, each of whom has their own backstory that's fleshed out in other songs, all interconnected in a way that the actual lyrics only skim the surface of. Yes! Backstory!!! There's a reference to one of the main themes of the album in the line "Have I told you about my theory yet? / It proves we might be more alike than you think." Themes!!! Oh, and they're all kind of assholes. Bonus!!! You can't tell but I'm completely making the sickos face right now.
I don't know if it's accurate to think of this song or album as hyperpop, but I do, and you can't stop me. It seems like a somewhat more substantive (not a value judgment) and less overwhelming (ditto) version of 100 gecs in a lot of ways. Also one that takes itself a little more seriously, though it's still plenty fun. Yeah, I don't know! I'm just really into this right now!
