Yas, slay, we stan our relatable anxious-depressed queen, etc. What I love about "Funeral" is how perfectly balanced it is between the sadness of the story Bridgers is telling and her own just-barely-funny self-aware self-absorption. There are two perfect Phoebe Bridgers moments here: the chorus, where she sings "Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time" with the merest sliver of frustration at her own brain, and "...wishing I was someone else, and feeling sorry for myself, when I remember someone's kid is dead," where it's like: ah. Yes. I see why you're frustrated.
If this song doesn't resonate with you at all, if you don't see yourself in it: congratulations, in a way. But it's probably safe to say that Phoebe Bridgers is not for you.
