Unbelievers
Vampire Weekend

#365songs (146 / 365)

I did like Vampire Weekend's first two albums, but their third, widely billed as a "more mature" version on the band, did feel a little more substantial to me, and it's stuck with me a bit more then any of their others. "Unbelievers" is a good example. Sure, singing about mortality with even one iota of nuance can be a quick and easy way to be seen as "mature." Sure, I'm an unbeliever myself and I don't personally give a shit about what the magical thinking of other people says will happen to me after death. But Ezra Koenig seems sincerely conflicted here, and the song is real nice. Unlike with some of my other #365songs I don't think this song stands head and shoulders above every other song its artist has done, because Vampire Weekend have a lot of pretty-good-to-great songs. "Unbelievers" is just the one that's stuck with me a little more than the others.
