Because I Got It Like That (Ultimatum mix)
Jungle Brothers
What’s a remix or cover you like more than the original?
I first heard this as track 4 on the album On the Floor at the Boutique: Mixed by Fatboy Slim and liked it immediately. Years later I decided to seek out the original song and it is so wildly different. The Ultimatum mix is so great and the original song... also exists.
Now it appears that the album isn't on any US streaming sites so I'm glad I have the CD and mp3s
Count It Off (feat. The Muscle Shoals Horns)
The Saturday Knights & The Muscle Shoals Horns
What’s a hidden gem or underrated song you love?
I really live in my own musical bubble so I have a hard time figuring out what's hidden. There have been a few times where I was surprised to learn that a band I listen to is actually quite well known.
But in my minimal research it looks like The Saturday Knights were not getting a ton of airplay or selling out 7,000 seat venues. Which is too bad because this is a really solid album with fun songs.
What’s a song that grew on you over time?
It took me a minute to get into Sleigh Bells in general

What’s your favorite deep cut from an album?
My first thought was a PUSA song but I'm saving that one for a different topic. Then I realized Stay Don't Go might be my favorite Spoon song and was definitely not a single. Though it's pretty hard for me know which songs were singles/well known after like 2001 or so.
The Rest of My Life
Sloan
What song makes you feel like you're in a different country?
I could've picked a song in another language but then realized I better liked the idea of submitting Sloan, a band that's famous in Canada but not so much anywhere else. Though most of what I know of Canadian culture is from Red Green, Letterkenny, and Shoresy. I've only actually been there 2 or 3 times and not since I was 5 or so years old.
I'll submit songs in Yoruba, Japanese, Swedish, etc on other days.
One thing I know about the rest of my life
I know that I'll be living it in Canada

What’s the last song you discovered and loved instantly?
I had the other Julie Ruin album first then found out this one existed. This song went straight to my top playlist.
New Tricks
Mary Prankster
What’s a lyric that resonates deeply with you and why?
Spent more years than I remember
In a club where every member
Never feels as if he quite belongs
I of course always felt like the odd-person out, the hanger-on, to any group so hearing this as something that a lot of people feel all the time, often about the same group, really hit.
If your life were a movie, what would its theme song be?
I don't have a great answer for this prompt but I think this works.
A song from a genre you didn’t think you’d like—what changed?
My first exposure to Wanda Jackson was as an eMusic free daily download. When I saw she was classified as "rockabilly" and "country" I almost didn't even bother getting the free song. I'm not certain what changed my mind but it was probably Jack White's involvement with this album.
I didn't become a devoted fan or anything but there are 4 tracks from this album that are in my regular everyday playlist because they're solid fun songs.
