"Flowers and You" reminds me of my dad every time I hear it. It’s a painful song, but it’s also a reminder that being honest about grief is part of healing, and that’s why it has stayed with me for so many years.

What's a song you only listen to when you're completely alone?

I mostly listen to music on my own, so I could really share any song today.

What's your favorite opening line from any song?

I’ve always loved this opening because it refuses to be literal. To me it feels like anxiety, grief, and nostalgia that are translated into images instead of sentences.

It still carries the spirit of punk, but you can already hear Joy Division becoming Joy Division.

What song do you turn to when you need to cry?

I know Lindsey Jordan wrote this song from a perspective that isn’t rooted in belief in God. Ironically, that’s part of why it affects me so much.

I hear someone wrestling with regret, mortality, and the possibility that there’s nothing after this. But because of my own faith, I end up hearing hope where she might have intended uncertainty.
