What is a song that makes you think of your first job?

For two summers, I worked at an amusement park. The soundtrack in the water park area was a handful of songs on repeat, including "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by The Beach Boys.

Music played from when the park opened until it closed. It's all fine when people are around during the day, but there was something eerie in the morning and at night when Beach Boys blasted to an empty water park.

I never know what songs are about so this topic is both easy and hard so I'm going with the cheap answer. Even after listening to the English version I still didn't know it was about nuclear war until it was explained to me.

Je suis retombé sur cette anecdote sur Reddit l'autre jour, à propos de Double Fantasy, l'album de John Lennon et Yoko Ono sorti fin 1980. Depuis, j'ai son morceau d'ouverture en tête.

Dans "(Just Like) Starting Over", John raconte donc son "nouveau départ" amoureux avec Yoko - les deux siamois ayant fameusement fait un long break quelques années plus tôt. Evidemment, on doit aussi comprendre qu'il s'agit d'un nouveau départ artistique, l'ironie étant qu'il se matérialise sous la forme d'un titre ultra-rétro plein de "wa-waaaa" et où il chante comme Elvis. Forcément, ça ne fait pas très moderne (Ottawan règne alors sur les charts avec D.I.S.C.O), la critique déteste, l'album fait un four.

Trois semaines plus tard, le nouveau départ prend des allures de sortie de route, quand un certain Mark Chapman demande à Lennon de bien vouloir lui signer son exemplaire de Double Fantasy avant de le gratifier de quatre balles dans le dos. Soudain, l'album devient culte.

I think I understood, at an intellectual level what the lyrics were saying when I first heard this in my early teens, but as I've grown older, whenever this crops up it's got much more heft, a weight of the reality of life, of growing older, of feeling like you've been left behind at times.

I have nothing for today's prompt. Today I am posting a song by The Sweet Inspirations. Whitney Houston's mother Cissy was a member and the founder of this group. This song is from their debut album which was released in 1967 on the Atlantic Records label. In addition to recording their own albums, The Sweet Inspirations also sang back up for a whole lot of artists including Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin.

Here Comes the Sun is a 'safe' song to play in a car. It's engaging without distracting the driver.

I was 11 or 12 when this came out. I remember listening to this song with my uncle, who was seven years older than me and someone I completely idolized as a kid. He’d drive me around in his hatchback Mustang with the windows down, listening to this track on repeat. Since I didn't have an older brother, he was the closest thing I had to one. Without a father, my uncles were my primary male role models at that point. Shortly after, he moved to Florida and I moved to another city. A lot changed during that time for a pre-teen. I had a lot of pain and questions, and music became my best friend for the first time.

To me, the perfect road trip song would be something like “Ventura Highway” by America.

Its warm acoustic sound and easygoing rhythm capture the feeling of driving with the windows down and nowhere to be in a hurry. It just blends perfectly with the scenery and turns the journey itself into the destination. 🛣️

This whole album is great for driving. It's fun, it's upbeat, everybody knows at least the big singles. But I might as well start with the on-the-nose choice.

Road trips evoke sunshine, convertibles, and the joy of the open road stretching ahead of you. Admittedly they don't actually always look like that but with this track blasting, you can't help but get caught up. The slow build from the opening bars into a raucous beat driven track, what's not to like?

The song is basically Texas outlaw mythology compressed into four minutes. Sonny and Sherry are not heroes in any moral sense, but Keen writes them with enough speed, grit, and sympathy that I just lean into it. It is kin to “Pancho and Lefty,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and old murder ballads, but with a roadhouse Texas frame and a sharper, bar-band chorus.
